Traditional East Asian Medicine
Holistic Support Using the Wisdom from Ancient Healing Systems and Medicinal Herbs
We offer a holistic, time-tested approach that treats the root causes of imbalance—not just symptoms—through gentle, personalized care that supports the body’s natural healing ability.
Acupuncture and other TEAM modalities are relatively safe, effective, and holistically supportive treatments well-suited for individuals, couples, and women who are trying to conceive, whether naturally or through assisted reproductive technologies.
Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM)
TEAM is a system of medicine that includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, as well as other modalities, from all over East Asia, namely China, Japan, and Korea.
This system of medicine has been around for thousands of years with well-documented clinical benefits, and is currently has more research supporting its healing effects now more than ever before in its history.
Recent clinical studies suggest that a whole-systems approach is significantly more effective for those trying to conceive, and that together acupuncture treatments and medicinal herbal medicine may:
balance reproductive hormones
improve sperm (count, morphology, & motility)
improve blood flow to the ovaries & uterus
increase implantation rates & pregnancy rates
enhance egg quality
increase ovarian response
increase uterine lining thickness and enhance uterine receptivity
reduce stress, anxiety, and depression associated with infertility
prevent miscarriage and early pregnancy loss
decrease western drug & medication side effects

Acupuncture originated in ancient China over 2,500 years ago as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves inserting incredibly thin, flexible, and sterile needles which are designed for single-use only.
By using specific points on the body to promote healing and balance the body, acupuncture can support a wide range of acute and chronic health concerns, including:
Women’s health & fertility
Menstrual pain, PCOS, endometriosis
Digestive disorders
Chronic fatigue and burnout
Anxiety, stress, and mood disorders
Autoimmune conditions
Headaches and migraines
Sleep issues and insomnia
Musculoskeletal pain
Allergies and immune support
At Fertile Moon Integrative Medicine, one of the cornerstones of our practice is Japanese Kiiko Matsumoto-Style Acupuncture, a unique, refined approach known for its precision, sensitivity, and immediate diagnostic feedback. We also integrate therapies such as herbal medicine, moxibustion, and cupping therapy to support healing on multiple levels—physical, emotional, and energetic.

East Asian herbal formulas are individually tailored to your constitution and health concerns. They support internal healing and regulate organ systems from within.
Common conditions treated with herbal medicine:
Digestive disorders (bloating, IBS, acid reflux)
Menstrual irregularities and fertility support
Fatigue and adrenal exhaustion
Colds, flus, and immune support
Anxiety, depression, and insomnia
At Fertile Moon Integrative Medicine, we use only the highest-quality granules, tinctures, or capsules for convenience and potency from companies like Five Flavor Herbs and Kamwo. These companies use independent testing to test the herbs for microbes, heavy metals (such as arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium), as well as for over 60 pesticide residues, including DDT and BHC. They source from the most reputable herb suppliers, including local farms and responsible wildcrafters.

Moxibustion is the warming of acupuncture points using the herb Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort). It enhances circulation, warms the body, and nourishes the vital energy known as Qi.
Moxa is especially helpful for:
Cold hands and feet
Menstrual cramps and irregular cycles
Chronic fatigue
Digestive sluggishness
Immune deficiency
Infertility
Breech baby
-
Cupping uses suction cups to stimulate circulation, release fascial tension, and detoxify the body. It is often used alongside acupuncture for muscular pain and stagnation.
Cupping may benefit:
Neck, back, and shoulder tension
Sports injuries and recovery
Respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis
Headaches and migraines
Stress-related tension

Tuina (pronounced twee-nah) is a form of therapeutic bodywork rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and includes hands-on manipulative techniques to restore balance and promote the smooth flow of Qi (energy) and blood throughout the body.
At Fertile Moon Integrative Medicine, we incorporate Tuina techniques into our Maya Abdominal Therapy sessions enhancing circulation, supporting organ function, and helping to release tension patterns that may impact reproductive, digestive, or structural health. This hands-on therapy complements acupuncture and other TEAM modalities by addressing both energetic and physical imbalances, offering a deeply integrative and healing experience.
“In Chinese Medicine, it’s not the chicken or the egg; it’s the chicken and the egg —things happen simultaneously. Nothing’s separate in the body; everything is connected.”

Your initial 2.5-hour visit is a comprehensive and supportive experience. We’ll begin with an in-depth conversation about your health history, menstrual cycle, and fertility journey, followed by personalized fertility education and helpful handouts to support you at home. You’ll receive a full physical assessment—including gentle abdominal palpation, tongue and pulse reading—and learn a self-care abdominal massage to continue between sessions. The visit concludes with a calming, personalized acupuncture treatment designed to support your reproductive and overall well-being.

The number of needles used can vary depending on your specific condition, but it typically ranges from 5 to 20 needles. The placement of the needles depends on your individual needs and the treatment goals we discussed earlier. They may be inserted on different areas of your body, such as your arms, legs, back, or abdomen, as well as your head, hands, and feet.

My approach combines Japanese (Kiiko Matsumoto Style) and Chinese acupuncture, Maya Abdominal Therapy, and herbal medicine with a deep focus on personalized care, understanding that each individual is different. When it comes to acupuncture, it is possible to experience mild side effects like slight bruising, temporary soreness, or occasional light-headedness. However, these effects are typically short-lived and should not be a cause for concern. It's a good idea to eat 30-60 minutes before your treatment, drink plenty of water and take it easy after the session to allow your body to fully integrate the treatment.
-
The number of treatment sessions you’ll need can vary depending on your individual situation and goals. In general, acupuncture works cumulatively, meaning that the effects build over time. For fertility support, most people will start to see noticeable improvements after about 3–4 months of regular treatments, typically once or twice a week.
Why this frequency? Acupuncture’s benefits are most effective when sessions are consistent, especially at the beginning. In China, it’s common for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors to treat their patients more frequently—sometimes even daily—which can lead to faster results. This frequency helps create more immediate changes in the body and supports faster healing.
Why at least 3 months for fertility? It takes about 90 days for both eggs and sperm to mature fully, which is why a minimum of 3 months of treatment is recommended to optimize your fertility. During this time, we’ll focus on improving your uterine environment, enhancing egg and sperm quality, balancing hormones, and regulating your menstrual cycle. Along the way, many clients notice improvements in other areas like sleep, digestion, mood, and even cervical mucus—sometimes before even achieving pregnancy.
Of course, every person is different, and some may see results sooner, while others may require a more customized treatment plan. We'll adjust as we go and tailor the approach based on how your body responds.

Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin, flexible, and sterile—designed for single-use only. They are much finer than the needles used for injections; in fact, about 30 acupuncture needles could fit inside the opening of a typical hypodermic needle!
Once in place, you might feel a mild tingling or subtle, dull sensation, but discomfort is rare. Acupuncture is intended to promote relaxation and restore balance in your body, and many people feel so relaxed during their session that they fall asleep.
In our clinic, we primarily use Japanese-style acupuncture, specifically the Kiiko Matsumoto style, which is known for being especially gentle and precise. This approach uses minimal needle stimulation and emphasizes comfort—needling is shallow and should be pain-free. It’s a style that focuses on finding and treating root imbalances through careful palpation and diagnostic feedback from the body, making each treatment deeply individualized and effective.

Our sessions are personalized and holistic, offering a range of therapies beyond acupuncture. In addition to needle-based treatments, we incorporate other traditional modalities from East Asian and Mayan medicine, such as herbal medicine, massage, moxibustion, and cupping therapy. If you’re feeling apprehensive about acupuncture, we can begin with these alternative approaches and assess how your body responds.
Some people may not actually need acupuncture, depending on their condition. However, a person most likely will not get the same results (or at least not as quickly) as he/she would otherwise by combining all of the powerful modalities together.

Our practice is currently focused on fertility support. At this time, we offer prenatal care exclusively to patients who began their journey with us through fertility treatments, though this may expand in the future. For all other needs, we are happy to connect you with trusted providers to ensure you receive the comprehensive care you deserve.

Acupuncture is not “woo-woo,” a placebo, nor pseudoscience…despite what you may read on Wikipedia. The “magic” is simply a physiological response from your body to the stimulus of a needle in a certain area or point.
When we understand the data that is available throughout the current literature, we can conclude that there are measurable changes that take place in the body when acupuncture needles are placed in these areas or points that affect our body’s natural pain killers, stress hormones, anti-inflammatories, micro-circulation, and much more.

Traditional Chinese medicine is not a religion, and no belief system is required to benefit from it. It’s all about harnessing the body’s own natural healing power and restoring balance!
What our patients are saying…
"I cannot say enough about Monica!! She treated me for over 2 years, through 2 pregnancies, and I am so grateful for her! She helped me to feel strong and prep my body for pregnancy, she taught me so much about fertility in general, and she made me feel supported throughout pregnancies and postpartum. As much as she helped me physically through acupuncture, she also helped me mentally through big life events (babies, postpartum, stress, etc.). She constantly goes above and beyond in making sure you stay healthy and meet your goals. We recently moved out of state and leaving Monica and her acupuncture practice was by far the hardest part for me! I cannot recommend her enough!"

“In preparation for my upcoming IVF transfer, I had treatments from Monica. She was extremely knowledgeable, comforting, and experienced. What stood out was how she genuinely cared about my overall wellness, in addition to sharing the benefits of Chinese medicine. Monica spent time outside of our appointments researching holistic alternative for some other issues I wanted treated. I highly recommend Monica whether you are experiencing fertility issues or are embarking on the IVF journey or want to reap the benefits that acupuncture offers the mind/body/soul. I am a HUGE believer that acupuncture was a major reason our IVF transfer was successful; currently 15 weeks pregnant.”
